The wels catfish is not a native of the Spain, it was introduced from the River Danube, Germany for sport fishing in the 1970's. In Spain it is presently confined to the River Ebro and tributaries. The wels catfish is known to have a very long lifespan and can weigh up 200 lb +. It is known as a predator or a scavenger as it will take most baits offered. The River Ebro is now considered by most anglers to be the best place in Europe to catch catfish. The river holds a huge head of carp which the catfish feed on with the result that the Ebro cats grow at the rate of ten to fifteen pounds per year making a new European Catfish Record possible.
